Live review: Papa Legba at BJs Rock In The Blues, The Minstrel, Chorley: 2nd July

Papa Legba are one of the best power rock trios to entertain us in Chorley. The band travelled from St Helen’s to give us a show, and that they did. The guitar wizardry of Alan Kaishin Crawford on lead guitar and vocals was superb – every time I see him he seems to get better, if that’s possible. Scott Crawford on bass guitar and backing vocals was brilliant, and his harmonising with Alan was spot on. Graham Brighouse on drums – he is one of the best I’ve heard, and in my opinion is the complete drummer, with terrific combinations of play, and when required plays a mean harmonica, all three are gifted musicians.
The first set started with Deep Purple’s “Hush”, with Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused”, “Bring It On Home” and ”Since I’ve Been Loving You”, “Killing Floor” by Jimi Hendrix – just superb guitar skills from Alan; “Back To Black “ by Amy Whitehouse, The Beatles “Yer Blues”, Eddie Boyd’s “Five Long Years” and finishing with “Sunshine of your Love” by Cream – absolutely dynamic.
The second set, with covers from Robert Johnson, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, The Animals, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, and a fantastic medley of “Voodoo Chile”, “Million Miles Away”, “Black Dog”, “Black Night”, “Whiskey In the Jar”, bringing to an end a fantastic show from this hot, talented band.
