Mike Vernon y Los Garcia – Just A Little Bit

(Cambayá Records: CB 101)

Legendary producer Mike Vernon steps behind the microphone himself on this most enjoyable release, “Just A Little Bit”, backed by the Spanish outfit, Los Garcia. The 14 tracks are, as the man says himself, “a personal homage to some of the greatest songwriters, vocalists, musicians and performers of their time”, and it’s hard to disagree with this collection of copper-bottomed blues, r&b and rock ‘n’ roll classics!

Apart from Mike Vernon on vocals and kazoo, the band comprise: Gabri Robledo (guitar), Luis Ignacio Robledo (guitar), Antonio Blanco (bass) and Federico Alvarez (drums), together with a whole host of fellow Spanish guest musicians, who all perform notably throughout.

This is great fun, all the way from the opening “Kansas City” to the closing “Shake Rattle And Roll”, with stops in between for the likes of the title cut, “The Seventh Son”, “Money Honey”, “Bloodshot Eyes” and “I’m Shakin'”. The band swing in fine style, with some seriously good guitar and horn work – without any needless solos swamping the classic songs and “Just A Little Bit” is all the better for that.

Mike Vernon has just been out on dates promoting the album in the company of a crack UK band, The Mighty Combo, featuring Steve ‘West Weston, Ian Jennings, Mike Hellier, Geraint Watkins, Paul Garner and Martin Winning, and more dates are promised . . . should be a treat indeed!
