Joe Bonamassa – Live At Radio City Music Hall (CD + DVD, CD + BLU-RAY, 2 LP VINYL, MP3)

(Provogue: PRD Promo 471CD/DVD)

It’s probably fair to say their is not a lot of middle-ground when it comes to Joe Bonamassa . . . whichever camp you belong to, it can’t be denied that he is the most popular blues rock guitarist on the planet right now, and this live CD/DVD set – his second of the year following the “Muddy Wolf” blues shows at Red Rocks in Colorado – will be lapped up by all his fans around the world . . .  and it’s out now!

“Live At Radio City Music Hall” has been culled from two sold-out shows this January, at the iconic New York venue – fulfilling a life long dream for him to play there. The set has a bumper 75 minutes of music, containing some Bonamassa favourites and two newly recorded songs. The live footage extends to over two and a half hours,  with a special 45-minute behind-the-scenes feature.

The shows were the finale to a special tour that featured both acoustic and electric sets, which was toured around the world. As ever with Joe Bonamassa’s bands he has surrounded himself with terrific and experienced players. The acoustic band, dubbed The Huckleberries, included Irish fiddler Gerry O’Connor; myckelharpa and mandola player, Mats Wester; percussionist, Lenny Castro; and the legendary keyboard player, Reese Wynans.

For the electric segment of the show his regular touring band are on show, which apart from Wynans again, comprise of Carmine Rojas on bass; drummer, Tal Bergman – with the horn section of Lee Thornburg (trumpet), Nick Lane (trombone) and Paulie Cerra (saxophone) – who all provide the necessary support for the main man’s blazing guitar work.

There is something here for all who like the bluesy Joe or the rocky Joe . . . starting with “I Can’t Be Satsfied”, the blues chestnut; a rollicking “I Gave Up Everything For You, ‘Cept The Blues”, with tremendous contributions from the horns and Reese Wynans sparkling piano; the popular “Dust Bowl” is another standout; with a nice take on the title track of “Different Shades Of Blue” that features the acoustic outfit.

Needless to say this comes as an essential purchase for all Joe Bonamassa fans out there – with the man on an unstoppable roller-coaster – and he hits our shores again soon with his tour starting in Newcastle on 21st October.
