There is a great atmosphere at the monthly blues jam at the Red Lion in Malpas. The Tommy Allen band provide great backing to a great night. The atmosphere is lovely with good playing and no monster egos.
This month we were graced by a regular visitor – one of the finest blues musicians in the country Johny Hewitt from Runcorn whose great playing and monster tone is an aspiration to all us harp players. There was also a great slide guitarist hailing all the way from Leicester – my apologies though, I don’t remember the name.
Second Thursday of every month. The next session is Thu 08 April.

Thanks to Blues Bob for tipping me off to this jam night on the Wirral. Bob says….
Weekly jam night now well into it’s second year every Thursday from about 9:00pm at The Southend Live, Tranmere, Wirral. The evenings are hosted by the house band Catch 32 who open proceedings with a few numbers. The night heavily features blues as you would expect from jam night, but anything goes. Guests are invited up for the rest of the evening and may comprise full bands or solo artist or a good mix n match of local players. The night features good array of local talent from Sax players, Guitarists, Drummers, harmonica and even Uke’s. Full backline available for bands. Everyone is made very welcome whether they are singing, playing or simply watching. For location map and more information pease visit the website at www.myspace.com/bluesbob.
If there are aspiring beginner musicians out there who are learning to play blues then it may be worthwhile popping on over to harmonicaboogie.com.
While the site and on-line jams are designed primarily for the harmonica players of the world, I think that there is a lot of value for other instruments. Maybe the most valuable resources are the free to use blues backing tracks, freely downloadable for you to jam along with. The tracks even give the harp players the key of the song and suggested harps to use.
Give it a go. If you upload a tune then send me the link and I’ll post it for the whole north west to hear.
Dave Sawyer writes in to tell us of a Blues Jam night.
