Lymm blues night sold out

Dave Sawyer writes to let us all know that the Blues night this week on 03 July with Atlanta Roots and Johny Hewitt and Tommy Allen has sold out. The venue only has a capacity of 100 and all these tickets have gone.

If you were thinking about going it’s too late. Tough! - Dave didn’t say that. I did. ;-)

Fun at Worthenbury

The mobile phone coverage is patchy here in the Welsh sun. Anyway, just in case this moblog gets through here are a few balding blues fans.

Janiva on Woodsongs

The beautiful and extremely talented songstress Janiva Magness makes a follow up appearance on The Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour.  The concert, like usual, is available in lofi audio, hifi audio and windows media streaming and downloadable video.

You can grab this little treat by navigating to the Woodsongs archive site and looking for show 484.

http://www.woodsongs.com/showlist.asp

I think that Janiva is a real talent and I am not the only one.

  • Best contemporary female artist 2006 and 2007
  • B.B. King Entertainer of the Year
  • 2008 BMA nominee.

She has such a natural style and sweet vocals.  This time Janiva is the first artist on the show, about 5 mins in.  Enjoy.

Worthenbury Festival

I’m off to Wortehnbury today.  I have my camera so will post a few piccies and maybe a YouTube when I return.  In addition I also have my smartphone that I have set up to moblog, so I can post to bluesinthenorthwest.com live from the festival.

Modern technology is great but if I recall there is no mobile phone signal in Worthenbury.

Lester Butler DVD

BluesDVD.nl have released a Lester Butler DVD….

LESTER BUTLER FEATURING ‘13′ - LIVE AT MOULIN BLUES 1998

That’s the title of the first-ever release of Lester Butler concert footage on DVD. This is not just some concert, but the last gig Lester ever did.

On May 2, 1998, Lester Butler and his band ‘13′ were the headliners of the 13th (!) edition of the Moulin Blues Festival in The Netherlands. It was an intense show, resulting in a jam session with fellow musicians like James Harman, Paul Size and Joe Louis Walker. When he walked off stage after more than 2 hours, no one could have suspected that it had been his last show ever. One week later, on May 9, Lester died tragically.
He left a deep impression with many people, and he was -and still is- an example and source of inspiration for many musicians.

For all these people and as a tribute to Lester, exactly 10 years later we present this concert registration on DVD, supplemented with some private footage and 3 tracks from his gig with former band The Red Devils at Moulin Blues 1993!

Although these recordings were never made with the intention of publication, we believe that, by releasing this DVD, we respectfully pay homage to Lester and his music. We hope that many people will enjoy it.

Jon Cleary at Maryport

Oh boy am I looking forward to seeing the incredibe Jon Cleary at Maryport.  It’s great to see a Brit successfully making the move to the US (New Orleans in Cleary’s case) and being regarded as top of the game.  Check out the clip of his funky band on the AT&T Blue Room site for a taste of the band in action.

Ramos in Blues in London

There’s pretty nice interview with Kid Ramos available in Blues in London.

http://www.bluesinlondon.com/interviews/int_ramos.html

Tell you what - that’s a really good all round site.  What if this region had a similar website for blues happenings in the north west of the UK, now that *would* be something.

Blues in London certainly looks a lot sweeter than bluesinthenorthwest.com but it seems that they we do share some similarities.  Blues in London say….

Bluesinlondon.com is run by just a handful of volunteers and on a no-string budget. As we’ve become more successful the workload has increased and we just can’t keep up….

I hear you brothers.  By the way their YouTube of the week is a killer.

Gig: Kent DuChaine - Blackpool - 27 June

Charismatic bluesman Kent duchaine is appearing at The Lawrence House studio at The Grand Theatre, Blackpool on Friday June 27th at 8.00pm.

At the young age of six, Kent DuChaine learned to play the ukulele from his father. At 13, after getting his first electric guitar, he and a few of his buddies formed a garage band in his hometown of Wayzata, Minnesota.  They performed at school functions and private parties, mostly playing popular music of the time. After reading the liner notes of an Eric Clapton album, DuChaine checked out a Robert Johnson album from the local library. So taken back by Johnson’s music he literally wore the album out listening to it.

He never looked back.  The music of the Mississippi Delta stole his heart. He immersed himself in the music of Johnson, Muddy Waters, Lightening Hopkins, T-Bone Walker, Bukka White and Elmore James.  DuChaine learned to play slide guitar in 1969. One year later he opened for slide guitar genius Bukka White.  From 1972 - 1975 DuChaine joined a band with Kim Wilson, of the present day Fabulous Thunderbirds. The band backed up blues greats Fenton Robinson, Boogie Woogie Red, Luther Tucker, Humbert Sumlin, and Eddie Burns. As the reputation of the band spread, legendary songwriter and performer Willie Dixon embraced them. Dixon arranged a recording contract and a concert sharing the bill with Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, the Howling Wolf and Margie Evans. In 1979 DuChaine found his beloved “Leadbessie.” She’s a beat-up 1934 National Steel Guitar kitted out with extra heavy strings to cope with his ferociously powerful style. Deciding to go solo in 1982, he took “Leadbessie” on the road, finally settling in the southeastern United States to be closer to the roots of the music he loved.

DuChaine met and established a partnership with legendary blues man Johnny Shines in 1989. They recorded Back to the Country with harmonica great Snooky Pryor.  They were honored with the coveted WC Handy Award for Best Country Blues Album. In 1991, the Smithsonian Institute honored the King of the Delta Blues, Robert Johnson. DuChaine and Shines were among the privileged few that were invited to perform at this prestigious 25th annual Festival of American Folklife.  The end result was the Grammy nominated album Roots of Rhythm and Blues: A Tribute to the Robert Johnson Era recorded by Sony/Columbia. DuChaine and Shines performed over 200 shows together traveling all over North America, all the while DuChaine continued his solo career. Their relationship was cut short by Shines’ death in April 1992. DuChaine, determined more than ever to spread the blues, began to perform in Europe and Scandinavia. He now has six albums under his belt, 44 plus tours overseas, and still manages to perform all over North America.  He was honored by the London Times naming him “one of the five best concerts in the UK.”
?
He reminds me of a young Muddy Waters. (Willie Dixon, 1975)
His playing takes me back to my earlier days. (Johnny Shines, 1990)
He is one of the few players who can really play Robert Johnson Materialwith conviction and power. (Robert Tilling - Blueprint Magazine 1993)

I’m back and in control

Hola a todos. I have returned from my few days working and relaxing in Spain. Just like normal, I worked in Madrid for a couple of days, then after I went to the beautiful city of Salamanca for the weekend. I only post this to point you in the direction of the photos and YouTube clips. While I was in Salamanca it was the last weekend of the 4th Festival de las Artes de Castilla y León and there were free concerts all over the city. None of them blues but I really enjoyed the majority of the acts. The Hammond of James Taylor from London was very good indeed and of all the acts probably the most agreeable to the majority of bluesinthenorthwest.com readers.

Seasick Steve’s fashion

I never thought that I would see a post about Seasick Steve in a men’s fashion blog. But there you go. Funny old world.

Where is Ken..?

Hola a todos.  I’m working in Madrid for the rest of this week but unlike normal Spanish working weeks I am not returning for the weekend.  I decided to extend my trip and take a weekend in Salamanca.  As a result, my ability to respond to normal bluesinthenorthwest.com business is a little limited.  I have scheduled some posts to be published but I may not be posting topical news.

Hasta pronto.
