Gig: Jay Tamkin Band – Wyre Blues – 29 Jul 2010

JayTamkin

The next Wyre Blues show at Fleetwoods Marine Hall takes place on Thursday July 29th and features the young West Country Guitarist Jay Tamkin with his band.

22 year old Jay Tamkin describes ‘Sorted’ his debut album on Wienerworld as ‘a documentary of my musical steps so far’.

It’s a significant observation for while this 22 year old West Country guitarist and multi instrumentalist is grounded in the blues he’s got the song writing ability and musical chops to fulfil his huge potential in a very contemporary way.

Indeed Classic Rock magazine recently likened the front cover of his album as resembling something from ‘the Madchester scene’, before commenting on his ‘instinctive guitar mangling’ and his ‘hip bucking grooves’. For make no mistake Jay Tamkin may be an up and coming rock/blues guitarist of the highest order but at heart he remains a fiercely independent musical spirit but firmly grounded in the blues.

Influenced on the blues side by SRV, Walter Trout and Albert and Freddie King, he cites Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen as being equally important influence on the jazz side. Jay was further inspired by Paul Jones’s BBC 2 Blues show  before finding his musical conduits in the shape of Popa Chubby and John Mayall’s guitarist Buddy Whittington. Significantly perhaps, he’s already managed to play with both of his heroes.

Jay learned his craft in the best possible environment spending 6 years with the esteemed Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra as principal bass player, a position that enabled him to combine musical theory and serious practice with such musical heavy weights as Jools Holland, Dennis Rollins and Roy Ayers. And it is the combination of
his musical confidence, a surprising mature song writing style and a willingness to explore musical boundaries that makes ‘Sorted’ such an impressive debut album.

‘I was going for an eclectic mix of styles’ says Jay. But while there are some wonderful musical tensions pulling him in the diverse directions of rock, funk and acoustic flavoured Latino styles, it’s the blues that lies at his core. ‘I enjoy a lot of different contemporary music,’ says Jay, ‘but blues takes real feeling and soul to express it properly. My songs tend to be little stories, based around real life experiences. In fact Popa Chubby virtually gave me the song ‘You Need A Woman’, when he gave me some much needed personal advice. I just transcribed what he told me into the lyrics of the song’ (laughs).

In an era when guitar heroes have made a strong comeback, Jay Tamkin isn’t about to make his pitch solely as a guitarist. Rather it’s his rich musical persona that marks his out as unique.  For while his restless imagination may push him into variety of styles via some fiery notes and melodic grooves, JT is treading his own path. Indeed as his album title suggests he’s just about ‘Sorted’.

Doors open at 8.00pm & show starts at 9.00pm. Tickets are £2.50 in advance from the Marine Hall box office on 01253 887693 or online at www.marinehall.co.uk or pay on the door.

Gig: Towerblues update – Chantal McGregor and King King

chantel

Just a quick word about two crackin’ gigs to round off 2009 in style. Two fantastic bands, Chantel McGregor Band and King King featuring Alan Nimmo will be coming to the area next week.

Chantel is a rock/blues guitarist who, according to her website, has owned a guitar since the age of three and started lessons when she was seven. Now, barely into her twenties, she has been described as a prodigy but has also been told that girls shouldn’t play guitar the way she does – it scares the boys. Thankfully, she ignored this “wonderful” piece of advice.

Having graduated in July 09 with a First Class Honours Degree in Popular Music The Chantel McGregor Band is now a full time operation. Her reputation is growing rapidly and on Thursday December 10th she makes her first appearance on The Fylde Coast.
The Chantel McGregor Band will be playing at Wyre Blues at The Marine Hall, Fleetwood at 9.00pm. Doors open 8.00, tickets are £7.50 from the box office on 01253 771141 or pay on the door.

“Softly softly” is not a maxim that King King are familiar with. Since surging into life less than twelve months ago they have barely stopped for breath, and their electrifying sound and scorching live shows have generated more of a thunderous roar than a buzz.
This band certainly knows how to make an entrance. Fronted by charismatic bluesman Alan Nimmo, their exhilarating debut at last year’s Monaghan Blues Festival created such a stir that it prompted organizer Somhairle MacConghail to state: “King King aren’t just playing the festival. Word is that King King ARE the festival”.

King King opened towerblues 2009 season with a blistering show at The Raikes and now they’re BACK.

King King will be rocking Poulton Community Centre on Saturday December 12th. Doors open 8.00, show starts at 9.00. Tickets on sale now priced £10 from Alan on 01253 890927.

Don’t miss these two great gigs!!!

Gig: Sherman Robertson – Fleetwood – 08 Oct 2009 and Warrington 10/10

sherman_robertson_kwadendamme_2005_0014[1]

Sherman Robertson

The Marine Hall, Fleetwood -Thursday October 8th

Warrington Pyramid Parr Hall – Saturday Oct 10th

On Thursday October 8th American bluesman Sherman Robertson will be playing at The Marine Hall, Fleetwood supported by the Mark Thornley Band. The show is presented by Alan Pearson’s towerblues.

Doors open 8.00. Tickets are £15 on sale from the box office on 01253 771141 or online at www.marinehall.co.uk.

Sherman then plays at Warrington Pyramid and Parr Hall on the Saturday night – I don’t know the details of the prices but tickets and information can be obtained from the box office 01925 442345 or can be o0btained online at www.pyramidparrhall.co.uk

Sherman Robertson is already considered a young master of zydeco, hard-swinging Texas electric blues, R&B and swampy Louisiana blues. Robertson often surprises audiences with his ability to play R&B, zydeco and blues with a rock edge. “I use that driving, road-cooking type zydeco groove, and put blues on top of it,” says Robertson. It’s basically rhythm and feel.” In June 2000, Robertson played at the Pioneer Valley Blues Festival in Massachusetts. Alligator president, Bruce Iglauer, was in the crowd. “He was always good,” he says, “but when I saw him in June he was on fire. He ruled the stage, had the audience in the palm of his hand, and his just plain physical showmanship reminded me of Albert Collins. As Soon as he walked of the stage I started talking about signing him. He’s got that Texas energy, great guitar chops, and is a wonderful, soulful singer.”

Sherman was born in Beaux Bridge, Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. Robertson quickly earned a local reputation as a very good guitarist. While still in high school Robertson was recruited by his music teacher, Conrad Johnson, to play in his popular group, Connie’s Combo (and otherwise adult band). As a teenager in the late 1960′s, he spent six weeks on the road as lead guitarist with blues superstar Bobby “Blue” Bland and also backed Junior Parker. That gave Sherman the incentive to form his own band, Sherman Robertson and the Crosstown Blues Band with whom he recorded two albums on the Lunar II label. During the 1970′s, Robertson was content playing weekends while raising a family and holding down a “regular” job until Clifton Chenier, ” the King Of Zydeco,” asked him to do some dates with his band. Those few dates turned into 5 years, as Robertson toured Europe and U.S. with Chenier. He then joined Terrance Simien’s hot, then young zydeco band, briefly playing with Rockin’ Dopsie, Johnny Clyde Copeland and several other well-known artists.

Gig: Tommy Allen and Johny Hewitt – Wyre Blues – Marine Hall, Fleetwood – 25 June 2009

 Tommy Allen and Johny Hewitt

Tommy Allen and Johny Hewitt

Wyre Blues sessions at The Marine Hall, Fleetwood

25 June 2009

Thursday June 25th sees the next of the popular Wyre Blues sessions at The Marine Hall, Fleetwood with the first appearance in the area of Tommy Allen & Johny Hewitt.  Tommy is better known for his guitar duties with Nicky Moore’s Blues Corporation and Trafficker and Johnny plays with Cheshire based Smokehouse Blues.

A mutual love of acoustic delta blues and electric Chicago blues saw them get together to jam and later, play pubs & clubs up and down the country.

A few words from their myspace site:-

The well-balanced musical mixture of Tommy Allen and Johny Hewitt has come from years of love and passion of the true blues. These two guys in everyday life perform in totally different style bands; though grown from the same roots, these roots are where Allen and Hewitt meet and take us on their very own journey to where the delta headed to Chicago and became electrified. You would have seen and heard music like this along Maxwell Street every day with the likes of Robert Nighthawk, Carey Bell and many other artists who bridged that pre-war acoustic and post-war urban electric styles. Tommy Allen and Johny Hewitt, the duo, are no-frills, no-nonsense, raw and honest and like Johny says, “Let the music speak for itself”.

Thursday June 25th at 9.00 in the Marine Hall, Fleetwood. Admission £2.50.

Wyre Blues continues at The Marine Hall on Thursday June 25th with a visit from Tommy Allen & Johny Hewitt.

Down at Antones portrait white bg

This Thursday gives bluesinthenorthwest.com readers in the north of the region a perfect opportunity to see the fondly remembered Down at Antone’s playing live at Wyre Blues Club held in the Wyre Bar in the Marine Hall in Fleetwood.

Since setting alight stages, venues and festivals of the north of England ten years ago, the band took a well deserved break from the blues circuit — but now the boys are back, older but none the wiser.  Featuring the same killer front line of Neil Partington on tough guitar and vocals and Ken Peace on big toned harmonica, the band have been enhanced with an all-new dynamite new rhythm section and a wizard on the keys.

Expect a night of tough shuffles, sweet and soulful blues, swinging classics, and some funky workouts.
