Gig: Ian Siegal – Oli Brown – Harpbreakers – Academy 3 Manchester – 12 Mar 2010

Ian Siegal 07

http://www.manchesteracademy.net/Artist%20Pages/iansiegal.html

A great triple header is set for Academy 3 Manchester on 12 Mar.

UK sensation Ian Siegal will appear with his top rated band supported by Oli Brown Band and The Harpbreakers.

British blues singer and guitarist Ian Siegal has been an active contributor to the UK blues scene for many years. His style reflects on the more rootsy side of the genre, drawing on influences such as Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddly, Junior Kimbrough and Tom Waits.

It has been said that had Siegal been around in the sixties he would today be accorded the same reverence as artists such as Van Morrison, Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton. Big Bill Morganfield (son of Muddy Waters) was quoted as saying (with reference to Ian Siegal) “You should be very proud to have this young man in your own country. You have someone right here who can really sing the deep blues. He got church in his voice. If my daddy were alive today he’d say “That’s my boy!”

It will be great to take a break from recording and try out some of my songs live at the gig, it will be great to get some feedback for the songs before they are released later in the year.”

Sean is currently managed by Stuart Ongley who also manages the award winning Irish singer Eleanor McEvoy.  The new album features performances from musicians who have recorded and toured with the likes of Damien Rice, The Frames, Van Morrison and others.  The Legendary slide player, BJ Cole himself appears on one track.  The media have compared the singer songwriter to the likes of John Martyn, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan.  He has appeared at all the major festivals all over Europe during the last year, which included an appearance at Glastonbury.  His music is being championed by the likes of Ian McMillan on BBC Radio 3, Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 & Tom Robinson on BBC 6 Music.  He has also been showcased on the cult ‘House of Mercy’ and ‘Raven N Blues shows’.

Review: The Hoax at The Band On The Wall, Manchester – 22 December 2009

Hugh Coltman

It’s very hard to believe but it is twenty years since the phenomenon that is The Hoax was formed. The gig at The Band On The Wall was one of just three appearances by the temporarily reformed quintet in the UK as part of a mini tour to celebrate its birth that long time ago.

Nostalgia ruled as a sizeable crowd demonstrated a fervent delight at being reconnected with a host of happy memories, having been impressively determined not to let the icy road conditions prevent their attendance. All the band’s favourite numbers were given a rapturous reception, including “I Want To Be Loved”, “Feeding Time”, “Groove Breaker” and “Bones”. There was also a terrific version of John Lennon’s “Come Together” and a magical rendition of the slow blues, “Don’t Shake My Hand”, which was embellished by a fabulous guitar solo from Jon Amor, who was in particularly sparkling form.

Hugh Coltman fronted the performance with his customary warmth and eloquence and set the tone magnificently throughout the show with his superb vocal delivery and excellent harmonica playing. Bass guitarist Robin Davey and drummer Mark Barrett were as steadfast as ever and Amor and Jesse Davey swapped lead guitar pyrotechnics in a fully complementary manner.

The time simply flashed by and all too soon the band left the stage to a deafening roar of appreciation, which was followed by an equally loud demand for an encore. If anything, the bar was then raised even higher with a fantastic version of the Red Devils’ classic, “Automatic”, and, to round off a wonderful evening, an airing of the ever-popular “Superstition”.

For their very significant contribution to the success of the occasion, credit is also due to the young North West-based trio, Tantrum, who delivered a vibrant rocking set to open the proceedings.

Gig: Erik Mongrain – UK Tour 2009

Erik Mongrain

Here are the dates from our region for guitarist Erik Mongrain.  Erik appears on Later With Jools Holland on BBC2 on Friday Nov 6th

14/11/2009           Poulton le Fylde      The Community Centre
15/11/2009           Liverpool     Live Lounge at Baby Blue
16/11/2009          Chester     Telford’s Warehouse
20/11/2009           Manchester     The Band on the Wall

Erik Mongrain was born in Montreal on April 12, 1980. When he was young, he was more into sports than music.

Growing up to the sounds of Metallica, Jimi Hendrix and mostly Kurt Cobain from Nirvana, Erik discovered an interest in guitar. At 14, he received a classical guitar as a gift and learnt by ear his favourite songs. A year later, he bought his very first electric guitar which allowed him to learn and play Nirvana songs to his delight.

Over the following four years, he learned guitar on his own, composed his own music and discovered Jean-Sebastian Bach’s classical guitar melodies, which he learned by heart. Around the age of 18, he discovered a Canadian guitar giant who goes by the name of Don Ross. It was during this period in his life that Erik chose acoustic guitar as his favourite musical instrument through which he wished to share his passion with others around him.

He made another major discovery with the contemporary music of a Californian named Michael Hedges. “It was a true revelation to me, I had finally found my niche” stated Erik. He is still a great fan of Michael Hedges to this day.

During that time, he discovered and experimented a technique, which was unknown to him until then, “lap tapping” – “I immediately adopted that technique.” With the guitar on his lap, he tapped the chords as if it were a piano. The effect was spectacular! People passing by on the streets were his first “fans”. Over those years, Erik played in streets and subway stations in Montreal, in the U.S. as well as in Europe.

In Granada, Spain, a journalist came across this young Montrealer, who was then 21, sitting on the sidewalk and playing his guitar. Impressed by his talent, he wrote an article in the “Granada” newspaper and made the following prediction:

As another great guitar tapping player, Stanley Jordan, Mongrain started out in the streets of Granada, he will continue on in the Barcelona subway and will probably end up recording on world class major labels
Jesus Arias, Granada, May 18, 2001

Erik is a musician who is constantly researching and exploring the world of music. For almost two years now, Erik has resumed standard guitar posture and has been writing at tremendous speed songs in which the harmonies and melodies are profoundly inspired.

It is often said that one cannot fight fate. From streets to T.V. sets, this young self-taught guitar player has not betrayed the old saying. 2007, Erik Mongrain launches his first CD entitled “Fates” …and now Equilibrium” to the delight of music lovers.

Gig: Bullfrog Brown in the northwest

Estonian Trio to Headline Blues Night at UK’s Only Dylanfest

Bullfrog2

Aug. 28th – Tower Blues Club, Blackpool, United Kingdom

Aug. 29th – Bob Dylan Acousticfest, Manchester, United Kingdom

Bullfrog Brown from Tartu, Estonia have been announced as Blues Night headliners at Manchester’s 3-day Bob Dylan Acousticfest, the only Dylan festival in the UK. The festival runs August 28 to 30 at the M19 Bar in Levenshulme, with the Estonian trio taking the stage on Saturday, August 29.

The night before, Bullfrog Brown are scheduled to play a Tower Blues concert at the Lawrence House Studio of Blackpool’s Grand Theatre. Both gigs are part of the band’s 6-week “Moon and Central” tour, encompassing 13 shows in 3 countries. In addition to topping the bill in Manchester and at the Pärnu Blues Festival in Estonia, tour highlights include appearances at Püssi Punk, Viru Folk, and Augustibluus music festivals in Estonia and at the Floating Cockroach alt.blues Festival in Finland.

“Lyrically, in structure, it has the complexity of Dylan. Musically, Estonia meets The Delta face on,” wrote Carol Borrington in Blues Matters! of “Bullfrog Brown with Steve Lury”, the band’s previous CD that made the French Power Blues chart in June; featuring Alar Kriisa on vocals and harmonica, Andres Roots on guitar, and Peeter Piik on bass, new album “Moon and Central” is due August 3rd. Of the ten tracks on the CD, British harpist Steve Lury again appears on one while Finland’s L.R. Phoenix and Denmark’s Nikolaj Andersen each provide backup on two. Among the new songs is also the 2009 remake of “Whiskers” with rock drummer Peeter Jõgioja on percussion that was recorded in March 2009 for the band’s surprise guest appearance on the Estonian Eurovision Finals TV show and witnessed by a reported 225 000.

Five tracks off the new CD are currently available for streaming at http://www.myspace.com/bullfrogbrown . Bullfrog Brown’s Blackpool and Manchester dates are supported by the Estonian Embassy in London; in late September, the band will be returning to South of England as a quartet to promote “Bullfrog Brown with Steve Lury”.
