Eric Burdon headlines at Maryport

The legendary Eric Burdon will headline Sunday July 26th at the Maryport Blues Festival, performing with  The Animals. Eric replaces Taj Mahal, who was forced to cancel his European tour, including the Maryport date, for personal reasons.

Eric Burdon’s scorchingly powerful blues-rock voice was the hallmark of Sixties group The Animals. Best known for their gritty, bluesy sound and string of hits like “House of the Rising Sun”, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” and “We’ve Gotta Get Out of this Place”, it was Burdon’s brooding intensity that burned the indelible mark on the consciousness of a whole generation of rock ‘n’ roll listeners.

The Animals line-up comprises  Billy Watts-guitar, Red Young-keyboards, Terry Wilson-Bass, Brannen Temple-drums.

MARYPORT Blues Festival is to be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 in what organisers have called a breakthrough in national recognition.

A two-hour special will be featured on the Paul Jones R&B Show on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Festival spokeswoman Eleanor Carr said it was a coup for Maryport because it would be the first UK blues festival to be recorded for a national radio broadcast.

Recordings made at the festival will also feature in other Paul Jones radio programmes in August as the special show approaches.

Maryport Newsletter – Festival is 24 to 26th July 2009

Tickets are on sale, on line from Ticketline, from The Carnegie Theatre, Workington or our Festival Office in Maryport. For the first time the Festival Office can accept credit cards. Also, we are delighted to announce that we have been able to hold the ticket prices at last year’s level. Check the website for details of prices and outlets.

Artists confirmed for the main stage are headliners Jethro Tull, John Mayall, and Taj Mahal with supporting acts Ruby Turner and The Blues Band with Paul Jones. Over the next couple of weeks, we will announce the other main stage artists representing established and emerging acts from the UK and US. As usual the winner of the Battle of the Bands competition,  local band Nine Lives, will launch the festival on the Friday evening.

Jethro Tull & Blues …

There were a few raised eyebrows amoungst Maryport blues fans when we announced Jethro Tull as a headliner, but they have been repeatedly suggested as a band many would like to see at the festival in our “Audience Feedback Forms”. With their roots in blues & the celebrated musicianship of charismatic frontman Ian Anderson, we didn’t hesitate to take the opportunity to book this legendary British rock band. This week, we asked Ian what he thought about playing Maryport and this is what he said:

“Always fun to go back to basics with the music form which shaped my teenage years and offered me a musical career. We will play some selections of blues-based material from the early days of Tull and maybe a couple of pieces from the traditional blues repertoire too. But, in keeping with the spirit of Jethro Tull, we will also throw in some more eclectic material which would have sent Muddy waters off to the beer tent…..”

Keep checking the festival website www.maryportblues.com for news on the rest of the line-up.

Best wishes from Maryport Blues

A great day yesterday.  Great atmosphere, great music, great food and great weather.  The highlight for me was Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen Band.  They were absolutely incredible, one of the best bands that I have ever seen.

Workshops at Maryport Blues Festival

MARYPORT BLUES FESTIVAL
www.maryportblues.com
Friday July 25th to Sunday July 27th 2008

WORKSHOPS  AT MARYPORT BLUES FESTIVAL

This year, there will be drumming workshops run by the great British drummer Sam Kelly, who was British Blues Connection Drummer of the Year for five consecutive years and guitar workshops run by Robin Bibi  one of the UK’s leading  electric blues guitarists. Both Sam and Robin are also performing on the trail with their respective bands.

The drumming workshops will be held in Maryport’s prestigious new cultural and community centre, The Wave and the guitar workshops will be held in the main marquee on Netherhall rugby ground.

Drumming workshops with Sam Kelly

In The Wave

Saturday and Sunday Morning 10.30 to 11.30

Tickets £5.00

Available from The Carnegie Workington 01900 602122 and The Festival Office, in The Maritime Museum, Maryport 01900 817200.

Sam will use his kit to illustrate his methods – how to get different textures of music using different sized drums/cymbals; how as a drummer you do not have to use the kit all the time (what you don’t play is sometimes as important as what you do!) and how to use simple methods such as hand claps & percussion to carry a rhythm. Participants are encouraged to listen to the music they are playing, to listen to what other musicians around them are playing and to find new ways of interpreting music.

The workshops are ‘hands on’ whenever possible and participants are encouraged to come along with instruments and join in. They are based around encouraging musicians, not just drummers, to work together in band situations, even to work together in a temporary situation such as a jam.

Guitar workshop with Robin Bibi

In the main marquee

Saturday and Sunday morning 10.30am to 11.30am
Tickets £5.00 and available as above

This  contemporary blues rock guitar workshop takes you through guitar techniques and Robins’s approach to guitar and where he aims to take it in rock blues.

About Sam Kelly

Sam Kelly was voted British Blues Connection “Drummer of the Year” for five years running. A versatile, creative, energetic player, Sam can regularly be seen drumming with Geoff Achison, Papa George Band, Giles Hedley & The Aviators, Empire State, The UK Funk Allstars and Errol Linton Blues Vibe, to name but a few….. But Sam’s main passion is his own band, Station House. He was the drummer on the hit “How Wonderful You Are”. Sam was the drums music teacher for the UK film ‘Swing’. Sam brings the unique rhythm and drive to Station House, playing as people often say ‘lead drums.’ http://www.sam-kelly.com/stationhouse.htm

About Robin Bibi

Robin Bibi is one of the UK’s top blues/rock guitarists and having paid his dues working with such names as Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Ben.E.King, The Pretty Things and Helen Shapiro, launched the Robin Bibi Band in 1996. The Band’s debut album ‘Blue Thrash Therapy’ was released a year later and quickly sold out leading to a recent re-release. Five albums on, Robin’s acoustic album ‘Fast Life Songs’ has also received critical acclaim and continues to sell well. Blues, funk, soul, rock, reggae and jazz are all rolled together in The Robin Bibi Band’s own feel-good concoction. Above all, the Band’s aim is to give their audience a night to remember whilst guaranteeing the best British Blues Rock can offer in a tried and tested, exciting, spontaneous, power trio format. Because of their widely known reputation with a highly entertaining stage presentation, the Robin Bibi Band are now one of the busiest bands round the Southern music venue circuit and have played most of the major Blues festivals in the UK, Ireland, and Europe. http://www.robinbibiband.co.uk/

Alvin Youngblood Hart’s Muscle Theory will perform at the Maryport Blues Festival on Friday July 25th, supporting Chuck Berry and replacing the previously billed Shemekia Copeland.

Known as a ‘musician’s musician’, Alvin Youngblood Hart’s praises have been sung by everyone from Ben Harper to Brit guitar gods Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor. Since his multi-award-winning 1996 debut album, the all-acoustic Big Mama’s Door, Hart has carried his musical message all over the world, performing at international venues from the Hollywood Bowl to London’s Royal Albert Hall.
