Here’s what the critics say about Troubadour

“Troubadour are fast making a name for themselves with their gritty and unusual mix of guitars, banjo, harmonica and even didgeridoo. With a driving set that paints a vivid picture of hope, frustration and honesty, they have been described as acoustic folk blues with songs that resonate the truth, full of passion and flair.” – (Robin Duke-Blackpool Gazette)…….

“There’s no disputing that Troubadour’s sound is truly original, to categorise them is to undermine their complex sound.” – (A.Charlesworth – Warchild) …

Gig: Towerblues update – Chantal McGregor and King King

chantel

Just a quick word about two crackin’ gigs to round off 2009 in style. Two fantastic bands, Chantel McGregor Band and King King featuring Alan Nimmo will be coming to the area next week.

Chantel is a rock/blues guitarist who, according to her website, has owned a guitar since the age of three and started lessons when she was seven. Now, barely into her twenties, she has been described as a prodigy but has also been told that girls shouldn’t play guitar the way she does – it scares the boys. Thankfully, she ignored this “wonderful” piece of advice.

Having graduated in July 09 with a First Class Honours Degree in Popular Music The Chantel McGregor Band is now a full time operation. Her reputation is growing rapidly and on Thursday December 10th she makes her first appearance on The Fylde Coast.
The Chantel McGregor Band will be playing at Wyre Blues at The Marine Hall, Fleetwood at 9.00pm. Doors open 8.00, tickets are £7.50 from the box office on 01253 771141 or pay on the door.

“Softly softly” is not a maxim that King King are familiar with. Since surging into life less than twelve months ago they have barely stopped for breath, and their electrifying sound and scorching live shows have generated more of a thunderous roar than a buzz.
This band certainly knows how to make an entrance. Fronted by charismatic bluesman Alan Nimmo, their exhilarating debut at last year’s Monaghan Blues Festival created such a stir that it prompted organizer Somhairle MacConghail to state: “King King aren’t just playing the festival. Word is that King King ARE the festival”.

King King opened towerblues 2009 season with a blistering show at The Raikes and now they’re BACK.

King King will be rocking Poulton Community Centre on Saturday December 12th. Doors open 8.00, show starts at 9.00. Tickets on sale now priced £10 from Alan on 01253 890927.

Don’t miss these two great gigs!!!

Gig: Erik Mongrain – UK Tour 2009

Erik Mongrain

Here are the dates from our region for guitarist Erik Mongrain.  Erik appears on Later With Jools Holland on BBC2 on Friday Nov 6th

14/11/2009           Poulton le Fylde      The Community Centre
15/11/2009           Liverpool     Live Lounge at Baby Blue
16/11/2009          Chester     Telford’s Warehouse
20/11/2009           Manchester     The Band on the Wall

Erik Mongrain was born in Montreal on April 12, 1980. When he was young, he was more into sports than music.

Growing up to the sounds of Metallica, Jimi Hendrix and mostly Kurt Cobain from Nirvana, Erik discovered an interest in guitar. At 14, he received a classical guitar as a gift and learnt by ear his favourite songs. A year later, he bought his very first electric guitar which allowed him to learn and play Nirvana songs to his delight.

Over the following four years, he learned guitar on his own, composed his own music and discovered Jean-Sebastian Bach’s classical guitar melodies, which he learned by heart. Around the age of 18, he discovered a Canadian guitar giant who goes by the name of Don Ross. It was during this period in his life that Erik chose acoustic guitar as his favourite musical instrument through which he wished to share his passion with others around him.

He made another major discovery with the contemporary music of a Californian named Michael Hedges. “It was a true revelation to me, I had finally found my niche” stated Erik. He is still a great fan of Michael Hedges to this day.

During that time, he discovered and experimented a technique, which was unknown to him until then, “lap tapping” – “I immediately adopted that technique.” With the guitar on his lap, he tapped the chords as if it were a piano. The effect was spectacular! People passing by on the streets were his first “fans”. Over those years, Erik played in streets and subway stations in Montreal, in the U.S. as well as in Europe.

In Granada, Spain, a journalist came across this young Montrealer, who was then 21, sitting on the sidewalk and playing his guitar. Impressed by his talent, he wrote an article in the “Granada” newspaper and made the following prediction:

As another great guitar tapping player, Stanley Jordan, Mongrain started out in the streets of Granada, he will continue on in the Barcelona subway and will probably end up recording on world class major labels
Jesus Arias, Granada, May 18, 2001

Erik is a musician who is constantly researching and exploring the world of music. For almost two years now, Erik has resumed standard guitar posture and has been writing at tremendous speed songs in which the harmonies and melodies are profoundly inspired.

It is often said that one cannot fight fate. From streets to T.V. sets, this young self-taught guitar player has not betrayed the old saying. 2007, Erik Mongrain launches his first CD entitled “Fates” …and now Equilibrium” to the delight of music lovers.

Gig: Aynsley Lister – Poulton-le-fylde – 07 Nov 2009

Aynsley Lister

On Saturday Nov 7th, towerblues presents Aynsley Lister at Poulton Community Hall, Breck Road, Poulton. The band now includes Morg Morgan on Keyboards well known for his many visits to the area as a member of Ian Parker’s band. Tickets are £10 from Alan on 01253 890927. Doors open 8.00pm. 9.00pm start.

Aynsley picked up the guitar at 8 and played his first gig at 13. One year later on a family trip to San Francisco, he was jamming at ‘Lou’s Bar’ on Pier 49. Brought up on his father’s record collection, he had learned to play by ear and would sit for hours in his bedroom playing along to old 45s of Freddie King, John Mayall and Eric Clapton.

He spent the next few years honing his craft and would play with anyone, anywhere. By the time he was 18, he had worked his way through various bands and decided to form his own. The band recorded two albums, but it was the second of these two that started things happening. Aynsley had begun writing and it was the three original numbers of this album that attracted the attention of Ruf Records ’ head honcho Thomas Ruf. In the summer of 1998, they signed a deal. Armed with an album worth of original songs and a handful of covers, Aynsley went into the studio with Producer Jim Gaines and set to work of his first major album, ‘Aynsley Lister’, featuring a guest appearance by Walter Trout

It would prove to be the start of a long and fruitful career taking him over the next few years all over Europe and working with some of the top names on the circuit. While Lister’s roots may be the blues, his own material incorporates more contemporary influences. His hard-hitting rhythms and guitar work are reminiscent of a young Clapton.

In those early years since his first album. Aynsley was already opening for artists such as Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, John Mayall and contemporaries such as Bryan Adams and Fun Lovin Criminals .

Now Aynsley headlines many of the major festivals in mainland Europe. He has twice played the Heitere Open Air in Switzerland to 12,000 people and 2006 saw him play the main stage at The Bayfront Blues Festival, MN. Later that year he was invited to sit in with Delbert McClinton during his second appearance (the first being in 2002) at The Pinedale Blues Festival in Wyoming, resulting in Delbert keeping Aynsley on stage for the whole second half of his show. September 2006 saw the US debut release of his 2000 album ‘Everything I Need’ in preparation for Aynsley’s plan to tour the America. Getting plenty of airplay it received critical acclaim.

Aynsley’s recorded work, he has sold over 75,000 records, has seen him working with Jesse Davey from legendary English blues band The Hoax on ‘Everything I Need’ in 2000; producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia) on his 2002 release ‘All Or Nothing’, and taking the production reins himself for 2007’s ‘Upside Down’. ‘Upside Down’ was Lister’s fourth studio album and his first to contain all originals

The only British artist to be featured in Classic Rocks 2007 review: TOP 10 CONTEMPORARY BLUES ARTISTS……….alongside The White Stripes, The Black Keys, John Mayer, Jon Spencer, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd , Joe Bonamassa , Derek Trucks and the North Mississippi Allstars
In June of 2008 Aynsley began working with ARM Management. ARM has worked with many successful artists, including The Hoax and more recently Eric Bibb. He signed to Manhaton Records in August 2008 and ‘Equilibrium’ was released in March 2009. ‘Equilibrium’ was produced by Steve Darrel Smith and features appearances by Robbie McIntosh(John Mayer) and also heralds a new direction for Lister.

Equilibrium has received tremendous reviews. Bob Harris claims it to be Aynsley’s best album so far. Classic Rock has listed in the top 50 albums released so far this year.

In May this year Aynsley supported Lynyrd Skynyrd on their Uk tour, playing to 16,000 people in 4 nights.

Gig: Sinnerboy – Poulton-le-Fylde – 25 July 2009

This Saturday sees the return of Sinnerboy, the UK’s No 1 Rory Gallagher tribute act to the Fylde coast.

Guitarist and singer Barry Barnes is one of Europe’s most active enthusiasts working to keep alive the music and memory of Rory Gallagher.

Since 1996 Barry has organized the annual Rory Gallagher tribute gig at
Dukinfield Town Hall, near Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire, making this the
first, and the longest running Rory Tribute in the world. Currently
established as one of the main events on the Rory calendar, and forced to
re-locate to Sheffield, it continues to grow and now ‘The Rory Gig’
attracts audiences in excess of four hundred people from throughout the UK
      and abroad.

The same impetus to celebrate Rory’s genius led Barry to form a tribute
band with two like-minded musicians – bassist Dave Burns and drummer Steve
Tansley. Both Dave and Steve are lifelong Rory fans, not just some
rhythm section that Barry has cobbled together, and it shows! Together as
Sinnerboy and driven by belief, enthusiasm and passion, it’s the bands
stated aim to be amongst the best Rory Gallagher tribute acts in the
      world.

Sinnerboy will be playing at Poulton Community Hall, Breck Road, Poulton le Fylde on Saturday July 25th at 9.00pm. Admission is £10. Ring Alan on 01253 890927 to reserve tickets.

Poulton Community Hall is next to Wyre Civic Centre on Breck Road and has plenty of free off street parking. If travelling by bus get the No 2, 15 or 84 to Poulton centre and it is five minutes walk down Breck Road.
