Andy Fairweather Low – Southport Arts Centre
Fri 04 September 2009
Here’s a top gig for later this week. Andy Fairweather Low is an under recognised and under appreciated name on the blues scene. I was talking to Grahame this afternoon and Grahame was telling me that the gig Grahame attended last year was stunning. Fairweather Low has a great band, is a great singer and an outstanding guitarist with a complete mastery of many styles.
You don’t get to play in Clapton’s band for years without being really really good.
If you’re interested, please call the box office on 01704 540011 to book your tickets.

Due to a mistake in the local press incorrectly listing the date for this gig I am reposting the details here.
The final reunion gig by 60s blues duo Jim James and Raphael Callaghan is a concert this Thursday, March 12th, at Park Golf Club, Park Road West, Southport, doors 7.30, music from 8pm, with Blue C as support. The venue is the current home of the Bothy Folk Club, and can be found a few hundred yards further on from the top end of Southport prom. Admission £5.
The duo are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their recordings with Jo Ann Kelly and Tony McPhee on the Gasoline LP for the Liberty label in 1969. Jim flies back to his home in the USA after the concert – so it’s your last chance to see him!

Blues fans who were around in the ’60s may remember the Liverpool acoustic duo Jim James & Raphael Callaghan. They appeared on the Liberty label LP Gasoline along with the likes of Jo Ann Kelly and Tony McPhee and their two tracks were critically acclaimed on its release in 1969. They also did sessions for the Mike Raven Blues Show, John Peel In Concert and Alexis Korner’s World Service radio show Blues Is Where You Hear it.
Jim has lived in the USA for many years, but he is flying over for just 3 gigs with Raphael to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Gasoline recordings.
First is this Sunday afternoon, March 8th, for Blues On The Rock, the monthly blues club hosted by Blue C (Raphael Callaghan & Christine Purnell). Music is from 1pm-4pm and there will also be blues memorabilia on display, and a chance to win blues CDs. There is a cafe/bottle bar. Admission is £4, which includes entrance to the fort’s museum. As usual with Blues On The Rock, the message is to get there on time if you want a seat!
The duo are also guests of the Everyman Folk Club (acoustic) in the Everyman Bistro, Hope Street, Liverpool, on Tuesday, March 10th at 8.15pm. Again, seating is limited so get there early.
Their final gig is a blues concert at the home of the Bothy Folk Club, the Park Golf Club, Park Road West in Southport (just around the corner from the top end of the prom). This is on Thursday, March 12th, doors open 7.30pm, music from 8pm. Support act Blue C. Admission £5.
The original Gasoline vinyl LP is valued at £80 in collector circles, but Jim & Raphael will have copies of the CD re-issue for sale at the gigs at a much more modest price . . .

SHERMAN ROBERTSON & BLUES MOVE
Friday 5 December, 8pm
Tickets: £12 (£10 concessions)
Sherman Robertson needs no introduction to Southport Arts Centre regulars having established himself a firm favourite with blues audiences over the years. Sherman has all the pedigree; born in Louisiana, raised in Texas, his soulful blues is richly spiced with Cajun, Zydeco and Swamp Blues, he learned his licks on the road with the likes of Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, Junior Parker and Clifton Chenier, and when Paul Simon needed an authentic Southern guitar man for his ‘Graceland’ album, it was to Sherman Robertson that he turned. A master guitarist, a consummate singer and a personality to charm the birds from the trees, Sherman Robertson is a sure-fire winner!
“Some of the best Texas soul-blues anyone could hope for. Potent singing and sizzling guitar, Sherman Robertson is one of the most important artist in blues.” Blues Revue

The Michael Roach Band, eight musicians dedicated to the soulful sound of rhythm and blues. Michael Roach, originally from Washington D.C. and now resident in the UK for the past thirteen years, is an internationally acclaimed country blues artist, with a voice like warm molasses and a winning personality to match. After eighteen months of rehearsing and writing songs, Michael teamed up to form a band with keyboardist Danny McCormack and saxophonist Paul Corry, resulting in the debut release, ‘I Betcha!’ in 2006. Powerful songwriting and a big band sound prominently featuring McCormack’s Hammond organ, a three-piece brass section and the sweet guitar sound of George ‘Jackie’ Lee make the Michael Roach Band an experience to savour.
