Gig: Wilko Johnson - Birkenhead - 5 Sept

INTERNATIONAL GUITAR FESTIVAL OF GREAT BRITAIN PRESENTS…

WILKO JOHNSON + SUPPORT

05 SEPTEMBER 2008

To say Wilko Johnson (Dr. Feelgood/The Blockheads) has the energy of a man half his age would be unfair, as most couldn’t get near his level of manic unstoppabilty!

Johnson’s career began in the 1970s as a staple of the ‘pub rock’ movement as guitarist and founding member of Dr Feelgood. He soon developed his own choppy, percussive guitar style, inspired by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates. The use of his fingers instead of using a pick allows him to play rhythm and lead at the same time, and allows him the freedom of being able to move around on stage in his jerky, almost unhinged style.

After leaving Dr Feelgood, Wilko went on to form the Solid Senders and play with Ian Dury’s Blockheads before forming his own trio - The Wilko Johnson Band - with Blockheads bassist Norman Watt-Roy and drummer Steve Monti (Curve/The Jesus and Mary Chain). Wilko remains one of the most exciting and individual guitarists on the circuit, catch his electrifying show at Pacific Road Arts Centre this September.

WILKO JOHNSON appears at Pacific Road Arts Centre on FRIDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER at 8pm.  For tickets contact Box Office 0151 647 0752.  Book on-line at www.pacificroad.co.uk

VINTAGE REVIEW
PAUL BYRD
Warrington R&B Club, Warrington Town FC: 17.09.04

The supremely talented Texan guitarist Paul Byrd, on his fourth visit to these shores, stopped off at Warrington for the first time, and gave the excellent turn-out a night of fantastic blues to remember!

The man from Forth Worth is a powerful performer - a master guitar player and also a great singer, who knows how to work a crowd with his laid-back charm very evident - picked up from many years on the road back home.

Backed by a great Midlands trio - Chris Lomas (bass), Fred Skidmore (keyboards) and Carl Hemmingsley (drums) - he delivered two knockout sets of classic blues - many from such masters as BB, Freddie and Albert King, together with songs from his current “Without Further Adieu” album.

The night kicked off with the rollicking “Sugar Free, Sugar Mama”, with its wry lyrics, before the first dip into the Albert King catalogue with the classic “Don’t Burn Down The Bridge” - with Byrd firing off some classic guitar lines, his face a picture of passion for the music and straight from the heart!

The timeless “Key To The Highway” was delivered in a funky groove, the way the late, great fellow Texan, Freddie King, used to play it, before the tempo was taken up for his own “Owe, Owe, Owe”, with its Jimmy Reed feel.

A much longer second set kicked off with Otis Rush’s “Cut You Loose”, with keyboard man Fred Skidmore given ample opportunity to solo, as indeed he was all night - having seen him many times in different bands this was probably the best I have seen him play!

Two standouts in the second set were the great “The Hustle Is On”, from another Texas legend, T-Bone Walker, with more fantastic guitar from Byrd; and the lovely jazz song, “Funny How Time Slips Away”. Another highlight was the Latimore song, “Straighten It Out” - his interpretation of this r&b hit from 1974, featured possibly the most intense vocal performance of the night.

A great medley featuring “Driving Wheel”, “So Many Roads, So Many Trains” and “Help The Poor” saw some blistering slow blues as Byrd stood tall at the front of the stage and let rip some quite stunning guitar.

A raucous end to a truly great night saw an audience sing-along on “Downhome Blues”, with the whole room joining in, and a romp through “Sweet Home Chicago”, which saw the dance floor full.

Many thanks must go to Ray and Barbara O’Hare for bringing such a great artist to the area - this is a man who should be on the main stage at festivals - promoters please take note! Come back soon Mr. Byrd - you are the real deal!

ANGELA BROWN

Angela Brown is certainly a blues diva - “raucous, raunchy and rumbustious” are just some of the words used to describe this great singer.
?
Born in Chicago, Illinois.  Angela began her musical career by singing gospel music in church and although she was aware of the blues she didn’t sing them until around 1980, when she played the role of Gertrude “Ma” Rainey in a stage musical.   Inspired by the music, she worked, honing her craft, in numerous Chicago blues clubs, often accompanied by pianists Little Brother Montgomery or Erwin Helfer. Her debut recordings were released by the Red Beans label in 1983, and the first album under her own name was made in 1987 for the German label Schubert.

She was dubbed “the Bessie Smith of the 80s’, a deserved title given her strong renditions of vaudeville blues material.  Her powerful voice is also well-suited to more modern blues styles, becoming a popular attraction at blues festivals all over the world not only vocally, but for her onstage presence and oomph!

Past years have seen Angela voted Overseas Female Artist of the Year and her album Thinking out Loud with her English band The Mighty 45s was runner up as the UK album of the Year.

With her favourite four piece band The Mighty 45s, Angela developed her act into one of the ‘hottest live blues, soul and gospel shows seen outside Chicago’ (Time Out) - touring in the UK with GTA on their successful American Festival of The Blues.

Angela Brown is a classy, powerful fusion of musical talent, performing a seamless mix of blues, soul, rock and jazz in her subtle but hard-hitting style.  Angela has the ‘.. sort of voice that, fully unleashed, could strip the Ronseal off your floorboards!” (The Sunday Times).

This year sees the release of the band’s new album with Angela In a dangerous mood. Warm, mellow, jazz ballads are mixed in with gospel and raunchy blues tracks.  She has a great voice and a really expressive one.   “…. All of it pretty close to sensational.”  (Surrey Advertiser)  She’s a larger than life character who knows how to get an audience eating out of her hand.?
PRESS QUOTES :

“…. the hottest blues, soul, jazz, gospel show seen outside of Chicago”   Time Out

“… with a voice as deep and hot as the earth’s core, Angela Brown proves beyond doubt
that her ranking alongside Etta James and Koko Taylor is fully justified”   Blues & Rhythm

“… they are a classy and powerful live experience.  Marks out of ten? Eleven”  Time Out

“.. it’s hard to isolate one member from the incredibly tight fusion of musical talent that
makes up The Mighty 45s. They make the hairs on the back of your next stand up” Mail on Sunday

“… raucous, raunchy and rumbustious, the earthy Chicago diva Angela Brown and
the excellent Mighty 45s established an immediate rapport with the capacity crowd” Southern Daily Echo

Gig: Little Toby Walker - Liverpool - 04 Sept

Little Toby Walker + Tom Doughty
at the Liverpool Marina
Thursday 4th September 2008 (doors open at 7.15pm, show starts at 8pm)

Such is his popularity, this will be Little Toby Walker’s third appearance at Liverpool Marina. Toby was born in New York and now lives in Long Island. A winner of the prestigious Memphis International Blues Challenge Award, he has a widely acclaimed reputation as an exceptionally gifted, finger-picking blues guitarist and singer. Like all great acoustic blues artistes, he is also a skilled storyteller, painting vivid pictures of his travels to the blues heartlands in the USA where he learned his trade at the feet of many old time blues musicians.

Supporting Toby will be Tom Doughty, who was born and raised in Frodsham and is a wonderfully talented lap steel guitarist. He is a highly regarded acoustic musician, with Bob Brosman and Woody Mann among his many admirers. His music is mainly blues based, combining well-loved covers with a generous helping of his own excellent compositions.

This is guaranteed to be a terrific double bill, which will set an admirable standard for the autumn programme.

Liverpool Marina is situated at Coburg Wharf, Sefton Street, Liverpool L3 4BP.
Tickets for the concert (£10 each in advance and £11 on the door) are obtainable from John Welsh on 0151 428 2855 or by email: johnswlesh@hotmail.com.

Blues in Madrid - Vladi Olmos and David Garcia

On Thursday night I was lucky enough to catch a very sweet blues duo in Madrid.

The evening, for half of the Spanish team along with my boss from Holland, started out with with a couple of cañas on the Plaza Mayor.  Dinner followed at a fantastic restaurant owned by a friend of one of the guys.  The food was “Modern Spanish” - authentic Spanish ingredients used to prepare new, quality Spanish dishes.

Highly recommended - http://www.fondalalechuga.com/

As we left the restaurant I mentioned the Blues Club and the Spanish sensibly beat a hasty retreat for at least six hours of sleep.  Not so fortunate for my non blues-loving boss who felt duty bound to come with me as we were staying at the same hotel.

So we popped off to the tiny cellar bar blues club La Coquette that I discovered on my last Madrid visit earlier in the summer.  As we entered we caught the second half of the blues duo Vladi Olmos and David Garcia - Vladi playing a selection of acoustic guitars and asturiano David Garcia palying some really sweet, sweet harmonica.  The songs covered were a handful of blues standards along with a couple of blues sung completely in Spanish that worked really well (no sorry  - I don’t know what the songs were about - I still have a lot to learn).

http://www.myspace.com/vladiolmosydavidgarcia

In my halting Spanish I asked the pair if I could sit in for a tune and in perfect English David told me yes, I was welcome.  I have to admit that the cañas and the vino were evident in my timekeeping and I was not exactly playing at my normal level.  But still, a great time was had by all and the mainly young crowd appreciated a the efforts of the red faced foreign stranger.

In summary Fonda La Lechuga, La Coquette, Vladi and David are all highly recommended.

Gig: Martin Stephenson - Blackpool - 01 Aug

On Friday August 1st the maverick talent that is Martin Stephenson will be appearing at The Lawrence house Studio of The Grand Theatre, Blackpool as part of the “Studio Blues” season

Martin Stephenson is a supremely gifted singer, songwriter, musician and performer, whose career in music stretches back over twenty years. Born in County Durham, in the North-East of England, on the 27th. July 1961, Martin was initially fired up to play in a band when the Punk Rock phenomenon went overground in the late 1970’s. Then, as now, however, Martin’s free spirit incorporated a love for an eclectic range of musical styles, from Rockabilly, show tunes, through to straight ahead rock and full-tilt Punk.

He convened The Daintees in the early 80’s, the name deliberately chosen as a response to the humourlessness and angst of much of the music of the time. The Daintees became one of the first bands to sign with the Newcastle-upon-Tyne based independent label, Kitchenware, and their debut single, “Roll On Summertime” was a sparkling, cheerful item that announced the arrival of a considerable new talent.

After Kitchenware packed Martin to London Records, he released the marvellous debut album, “Boat To Bolivia” (1985) with The Daintees, under the Production auspices of future Pixies/Bunnymen/James sound man Gil Norton. The album positively burst with excellent, rootsy pop songs, boasting a veritable rainbow of styles, sung and played with a youthful enthusiasm and warmth that paradoxically, perhaps, displayed a mature, unique Songwriting voice. Songs such as the bittersweet “Crocodile Cryer”, the alcoholic’s lament “Little Red Bottle”, the emphatic “Running Waters” and the haunting ballad “Rain” further underscored the impression that “Roll On Summertime” had made. Lengthy bouts of touring saw Stephenson and the band taking his music to the people, and they loved it, carving an awesome reputation as a live act.

Subsequent albums, “Gladsome, Humour, and Blue” (1987), “Salutation Road” (1989), “The Boy’s Heart” (1992) however, failed to distil the essence of Stephenson’s muse quite so effectively. London’s quest for a hit single ran converse to Stephenson’s desire to make a purer, more heartfelt music, although all said albums had their moments.

Martin’s instinct to kick against the label’s constraints saw him undertake tours of highland Folk clubs and tiny bars.

Martin left London in 1993, and also severed his ties with the Kitchenware management team. He signed to the West London based indie Demon Records, for whom he made three, highly acclaimed albums “Yogi in My House”, “Sweet Misdemeanour” (both 1995) and “Beyond the Leap, Beyond The Law” (1997).

Following the sale of Demon in 1998, Martin moved on, releasing “When It’s Gone, It’s Gone” on the Tyneside-based independent, “Get Rhythm”, and during April 1999, released his eponymous album for the Floating World label. The album consists of re-recordings of some of his finest songs, from all stages of his career, free from commercial constraints of the mainstream music industry. Now relocated in the Highlands of Scotland, Martin remains a gifted, but self-effacing, and modest individual. He ploughs his own furrow, still refining his already prodigious musical skills. “The Lilac Tree”, a more acoustic-based project that displays further evidence of a maturing talent in its prime.

When he’s not singing in Tee-Pees with the highland tree People or playing the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall with Janis Ian, you could see him standing on the corner in Inverness town with a banj/tar playing ragtime. Maybe travelling through Spain solo or with his swing band ‘The Toe-Rags’, cutting original ‘Sun-style’ tunes selling Vicar St out in Dublin - bang on Merle Travis & Scott Joplin! Blistering thumbpicking(!) or playing chess, writing poetry in an Alness Cafe or an intimate London show in the 12 Bar, Denmark St. next to “Hank’s” guitar shop where he hacked his two vintage Gibsons in 1992. But you’ll not see him drinking or with the fat cats. Time’s too short. There’s too much Doc Watson to learn out there!

Tickets are £10 from The box office on 01253 290190 or online from www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk
