Top international blues artists seek NW dates

Geoff Achison

Geoff Achison

Toby Walker

Toby Walker

Two highly regarded blues artists will be playing dates in the region this autumn.  Little Toby Walker is playing Liverpool on 28 Oct and Geoff Achison is playing Warrington on 08 Oct.

There are gaps in the schedules of these two excellent performers and agent John Adams is looking for dates around the dates above to fill the schedule and to make the tours more viable.

If you have any leads or you are a theatre or club owner with available dates then please contact John at john.adams@mail.com.

I have never seen Geoff Achison, but I have heard some great reports.  I was lucky enough to see Toby Walker at a brilliant gig in Worthenbury last year.

Review: Debbie Giles Midnight Train at Warrington Burtonwood Blues Club – 19 February 2010

Debbie Giles

Having travelled all the way from Guildford in Surrey, Debbie Giles’ Midnight Train deserved a much bigger crowd than that which assembled in the Burtonwood Catholic Club. Fortunately, however, as Debbie warmly acknowledged, the sparse gathering proved to be a receptive and attentive audience, which contributed significantly to the undoubted success of the event.

Expertly driven by Sam Kelly on drums and Chris Belshaw on bass guitar, the band got instantly into its stride with a meaty, medium-paced opener and Etta James’s “Somebody To Love” before delivering a fine version of BB King’s “Help The Poor”, which allowed guitarist, Pete Emery, and keyboard player, Steve Oakman, the opportunity to strut their stuff with tasty solos. The first set also included Keb Mo’s slow blues, “Don’t Try To Explain” and Prince’s “Automatic” and ended with a splendid rendition of “On The 7th Day”, which particularly suited Debbie Giles’s sultry vocals.

The second set began with a jumping instrumental followed by an excellent rendition of “The Fundamental Things” from the Bonnie Raitt songbook and the funky, Ann Peebles hit, “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home”. The varied and lively set also featured “Stormy Monday”, Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish” and a bouncing delivery of John Cleary’s “Take My Heart”. Understandably, there was a loud demand for an encore, which was provided in the shape of BB King’s “When Love Comes To Town” to round off a very enjoyable evening.

Gig: Smokehouse Blues – Appleton Thorn Village Hall – 20 Feb 2009

Jonny Hewitt guests with Down at Antones_DSC7757

SMOKEHOUSE BLUES
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 20th 8:30pm
APPLETON THORN VILLAGE HALL
Nr. WARRINGTON

The promoters have finally managed to pin the band down to make a very welcome return to the multi-CAMRA award winning Village Hall on Saturday 20th February.

Barney Barnett (guitar), Russ Williams (stand-up bass) and Mark Donaldson (drums) complement Johnny Hewitt’s harp and vocals perfectly. Their mix of West Coast, Chicago blues and own material sounds even better than usual in the intimate venue.

They have restricted the audience, and admission by ticket is only £8. Admission may be available on the door (£9) but the last time they visited it was a sell out. Tickets  are available from either the village hall itself or from Roger Kenyon on 07946 378599.

P.S.
They also have two other gigs scheduled and tickets are going fast for both of these. Even though they are not strictly blues based, the virtuosity of these two acoustic guitarists is quite something to behold.

Gig: Ian Parker – Warrington Blues Club – 16 Oct 2009 – TONIGHT

Ian Parker

Once again Warrington Blues Club are bringing a top blues guitarist/singer to the club. IAN PARKER plays original , dirty-sounding sweaty blues. But he also has pop tunes in his repertoire. He sounds like the U2 guitarist The Edge, he sounds like Mark Knopfler. He has mastered Country, he has mastered Folk, he has mastered the whole range of Americana music.

You get engrossed in his guitar playing that you quickly forget his English origin; he does not sound like he’s from the UK. Parker in his worn jeans sounds like heat , desert and dirt, like poor Americans tolling in remote industrial towns. So don’t miss this great gig on

Sherman Robertson

The Marine Hall, Fleetwood -Thursday October 8th

Warrington Pyramid Parr Hall – Saturday Oct 10th

On Thursday October 8th American bluesman Sherman Robertson will be playing at The Marine Hall, Fleetwood supported by the Mark Thornley Band. The show is presented by Alan Pearson’s towerblues.

Doors open 8.00. Tickets are £15 on sale from the box office on 01253 771141 or online at www.marinehall.co.uk.

Sherman then plays at Warrington Pyramid and Parr Hall on the Saturday night – I don’t know the details of the prices but tickets and information can be obtained from the box office 01925 442345 or can be o0btained online at www.pyramidparrhall.co.uk

Sherman Robertson is already considered a young master of zydeco, hard-swinging Texas electric blues, R&B and swampy Louisiana blues. Robertson often surprises audiences with his ability to play R&B, zydeco and blues with a rock edge. “I use that driving, road-cooking type zydeco groove, and put blues on top of it,” says Robertson. It’s basically rhythm and feel.” In June 2000, Robertson played at the Pioneer Valley Blues Festival in Massachusetts. Alligator president, Bruce Iglauer, was in the crowd. “He was always good,” he says, “but when I saw him in June he was on fire. He ruled the stage, had the audience in the palm of his hand, and his just plain physical showmanship reminded me of Albert Collins. As Soon as he walked of the stage I started talking about signing him. He’s got that Texas energy, great guitar chops, and is a wonderful, soulful singer.”

Sherman was born in Beaux Bridge, Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. Robertson quickly earned a local reputation as a very good guitarist. While still in high school Robertson was recruited by his music teacher, Conrad Johnson, to play in his popular group, Connie’s Combo (and otherwise adult band). As a teenager in the late 1960’s, he spent six weeks on the road as lead guitarist with blues superstar Bobby “Blue” Bland and also backed Junior Parker. That gave Sherman the incentive to form his own band, Sherman Robertson and the Crosstown Blues Band with whom he recorded two albums on the Lunar II label. During the 1970’s, Robertson was content playing weekends while raising a family and holding down a “regular” job until Clifton Chenier, ” the King Of Zydeco,” asked him to do some dates with his band. Those few dates turned into 5 years, as Robertson toured Europe and U.S. with Chenier. He then joined Terrance Simien’s hot, then young zydeco band, briefly playing with Rockin’ Dopsie, Johnny Clyde Copeland and several other well-known artists.

Gig: Cadillac Kings in the region in 2009

Here are the dates for the Cadillac Kings in the northwest winter 2009.

17 Oct 2009 20:00
Telford’s Warehouse Chester
20 Nov 2009 20:00
The Academy, Buckley North Wales
11 Dec 2009 20:00
Warrington R&B Club Warrington

Featuring six of the UK’s top blues & roots musicians, The Cadillac Kings play music inspired by the sounds & styles of the ‘40s & ‘50s. A mix of mostly original songs with a few well-chosen covers from the likes of T-Bone Walker, Roy Brown & Champion Jack Dupree have made the band firm favourites on both the blues & jump-jive scenes. With their stunning musicianship & exciting stage act, this is a band that knows how to entertain audiences across the board, from arts centres to dance-halls, from intimate clubs to major festivals.

With backgrounds including Otis Grand’s Band, James Hunter’s Jokers, The Poorboys, Big Joe Louis, and Little George Sueref, The Cadillac Kings came together in the year 2000. They became an immediate hit at venues & festivals all over the UK . 2001 saw the release of their debut CD ‘Lou Ann’ which received wide airplay in the UK & abroad, culminating in a nomination for the 2002 USA Swing Awards.Tour dates have included London’s 100 Club, the Great British R&B Festival, the Burnley Blues Festival, London’s Hackney Empire, the Black Horse World Music Festival in Sussex, Crawley Folk Festival, Soho Jazz & Heritage Festival, UK Arts Council tour, the Gloucester Blues Festival, (Norway’s huge) Notodden Blues Festival, the Ørland Blues Fest, the Drobak Festival, Denmark’s annual Blues Cruise, the Duvel Blues Festival in Belgium & the Rotterdam Bluezy Festival in Holland.

Now signed to ‘33’ Records, home of Don Weller, Stan Tracey, Tina May & the cream of UK jazz & world musicians, November 2004 saw the release of the band’s second CD ‘Highway 17’. Not such a strange label signing when you consider the words of 33’s boss Paul Jolly – “this band truly swings!”

In December 2004 the music critics of The London Times agreed and included ‘Highway 17′ in their list of the best 24 CDs of the year and chose it overall best blues CD. Ashwyn Smyth of Blues Matters’ Magazine also chose it as his CD of the year, and Blues in Britain Magazine listed it in the top releases of the year.

More recently, and for the third year in succession, The Cadillac Kings have won the categories for ‘best blues band’ & ‘best harmonica player’ in the 2005 Wychwood Brewery/ Running Horse Awards, as voted for by the audiences at Nottingham’s top live blues venue.
